For more than 47 years, the Fleet Science Center has inspired millions of people and provided access to science education. During that time, San Diego became one of the most powerful science and technology hubs in the world. Yet, California’s 8th graders rank 47th in the nation in science proficiency. While 23% of the region’s jobs require a high degree of knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), only 1% of these students are ranked by national test scores as advanced. Advisory Council Member, Carol Chang is helping the Fleet Science Center address this crisis by transforming the museum into a county-wide organization devoted to establishing and supporting communities rich in science-learning.
