7-26-19 Giving Back Magazine’s “Feel Good Friday” – David Winkler & Diabetes Research Connection

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or respond to insulin which results in elevated glucose levels.

There are two main types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 Diabetes – The body lacks the cells which produce insulin. Insulin injections are the most common treatment for type 1 diabetes. It’s important to remember that insulin is a life-saving treatment but it is not a cure.

2) Type 2 Diabetes – The body’s cells fail to respond to insulin or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is not an autoimmune disease so lifestyle and dietary changes can bring blood sugar levels back into the normal range.

At the age of 6, David Winkler was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and was told he wouldn’t live past the age of 30.

David is now in his 60’s and founded the Diabetes Research Connection to offer hope, advancements and one day a cure.
